Building Towards a Caring Society

YOKUK – A Foundation for the Disabled and Underprivileged is a charitable foundation established to alleviate the plight of people with disabilities and to give them a meaningful life. First started in July 1999, at the Rumah Seri Kenangan, Pengkalan Chepa, Kelantan, YOKUK now provide services to more than 6,000 registered clients free of charge.

The one-stop centre at Jalan Padang Tembak, Pengkalan Chepa provide all kinds of therapy services, welfare services and also vocational training.

YOKUK aims to build on the spirit of a caring society through its Community-based Rehabilitation Program (CBR). The underlying structure of the CBR Program is founded upon the principles that the local community, in which the disabled people reside, has the duty and responsibility to assist them to fully realise their equal rights as citizens and human beings.

Therefore, the clients registered with YOKUK are with their family at their home. They come to the centre daily for therapy program, workshop, vocational class or any other activities. Many clients come from poor families or live in impoverished rural areas and they cannot afford to come to our centre, YOKUK will then visit them at their homes. During this visit, we teach the family member on how to take care of the disabled as well as do simple therapy.

Program Makanan Kesihatan (ProMAK)

This project started during the big floods in 2014. A group of individuals who called themselves the RONIN group were working the ground to provide help to the people who were affected by the floods. As they continued the work, they also found that there were many malnourished children. This was when the idea came out to feed schoolchildren proper lunches for every school day.

In the first 5 years of the ProMAK project, we worked with a total of 18 schools, providing over 300,000 meals throughout the state of Kelantan and Terengganu. These are selected schools where the students are underprivileged and the schools are in really rural areas.

In 2022, we are working with another 34 schools in Kelantan and Terengganu, feeding more than 6,000 students daily.

We have seen the benefits where more children come to school and parents are happy as it saves them money and the children are healthier for it. Many of these families are from the B40 income category who have been affected by the various natural disasters as well as the COVID-19 pandemic.

Yayasan Sime Darby

Yayasan Sime Darby has been our staunch partner in our Palliative Care Services since 2014 for bedridden clients who are no longer able to stay on in the hospitals. To date, we have 10 staff of nurses and physiotherapists and one matron who oversees the entire service.

Through this collaboration, we have conducted about 4,000 home visits per annum to our clients and we have a total of over 600 registered clients. They are bedridden due to cancer, stroke, kidney failure diseases, motor vehicle accidents, and other life limiting conditions. Our service has been able to increase their end-of-life quality and give relief to their families. We are also honoured to be able to have five cars sponsored by Yayasan Sime Darby to ease our mode of transportation to our clients’ houses.

CIMB Foundation & CIMB Islamic

YOKUK has collaborated with CIMB Foundation & CIMB Islamic through various projects. CIMB Foundation has sponsored our Mobil Penyayang van which provides free transportation for wheelchair-bound clients. We have also collaborated to hold many medical camps throughout Kelantan since 2011.

Up to 2016, we have organised medical camps at 7 different districts in Kelantan which involved 200 people for each session. During the camps, we offered general health screening, blood donation, dental service, pap smear tests, as well as pharmaceutical services for medication.

A most significant collaboration is our YOKUK – CIMB Hydrotherapy Pool building. This allows our hydrotherapy sessions to be carried out daily, come rain or shine. We are truly grateful for the continued support from CIMB Foundation and CIMB Islamic and we hope this continues in order to benefit the Kelantan community of the disabled and underprivileged.

YOKUK had also been invited to attend conferences at the Kao Shiang University Taiwan to train our Palliative personnel a couple of years in a row. In addition the Artevelde University of Applied Sciences, Belgium has continuously been sending students for work experiences in YOKUK for many years. We even managed to do a virtual work experience exchange during the pandemic era.

YOKUK Food for Good collaboration with MRCB, Nestle, F&N, and more…

Since 2015, we have partnered with many corporations, NGOs, and individuals to serve the hungry in the Kelantan community. We address short-term needs and scale long-term solutions in the community of the disabled and the underprivileged.

A very busy month is the holy month of Ramadan. Annually, we organise daily iftar for many villages especially in the rural areas.

An average of 3 villages or 150-200 families a year would be selected. The villagers will receive daily iftar meals from appointed caterers at their local mosques. Nearly 1500 families from 24 villages in the rural area of Kelantan have since then benefited from this programme through the years.

We have also worked with companies to distribute food baskets containing groceries for their daily needs, as well as on an annual basis. Many corporate organisations have stepped in to make a difference, such as MRCB, Nestle, F&N, and many more.
